Togo is beloved as the “unsung hero” of the 1925 Nome Serum Run, an emergency mission to deliver life-saving diphtheria antitoxin to Nome, Alaska. While another dog named Balto initially received the most public fame for leading the final leg of the relay, Togo is widely recognized by historians and mushers as the true powerhouse of the mission.

• The “Infant Prodigy”: As a puppy, Togo was deemed a troublemaker and given away as a pet twice. He escaped both times to return to musher Leonhard Seppala, eventually leading a team for 75 miles on his very first day in a harness at just 8 months old.
• Naming Origins: He was named after Tōgō Heihachirō, a legendary Japanese admiral known as the “Nelson of the East”.
• A Cinematic Double: In the 2019 Disney film, the dog who played Togo, named Diesel, is a direct descendant of the real Togo from 14 generations ago.
• Master of the Ice: During the 1925 Serum Run, Togo famously saved his team by jumping across a 5-foot gap of icy water. When his lead line snapped, he supposedly grabbed it in his mouth and pulled the ice floe to safety.
• A Signed Legacy: In 1928, a book titled Togo’s Fireside Reflections was “signed” by Togo—Seppala would dip the dog’s paw in ink to autograph copies for fans.
• Ultimate Hero: In 2011, Time magazine officially named Togo the “most heroic animal of all time,” surpassing Alexander the Great’s horse, Bucephalus.
