Fun Facts

  • He couldn’t howl: For scenes requiring a howl, Strongheart’s brother, Flash, served as his “howling double”.
  • A “gentle” attack dog: Due to his strict police training, Strongheart didn’t know how to play. His trainer, Laurence Trimble, “detrained” him and taught him how to “attack” actors by tearing their clothes to shreds without leaving a single scratch on them.
  • He had a PR team that spun his past: To avoid anti-German sentiment after WWI, his public relations team described his military service with the German police as heroic “Red Cross” duty.
  • He “signed” autographs: At public appearances, Strongheart would sign autographs for adoring fans by dipping his paw in an ink pad and placing a print on a photo.
  • He was a high-earner: At his peak, Strongheart was estimated to have earned no less than $2.5 million (a massive sum in the 1920s), and his income tax in one year alone was a reported $38,000.
  • Accused of murder: In a bizarre 1928 incident, Strongheart was falsely accused of murdering a young child. His name was officially cleared, and the accusers were prosecuted for false testimony.
  • A spiritual muse: After Strongheart’s death, his owner’s friend, J. Allen Boone, wrote two popular nonfiction books (Letters to Strongheart and Kinship with All Life) that chronicled their deep, spiritual connection, giving the dog a legacy beyond cinema.
  • His bloodline lives on: Strongheart and his on-screen mate, Lady Jule, had many offspring, and their descendants are still alive today. One grandson named Silver King appeared in films and made personal appearances to teach children about safety.
  • A famous quote hung over his bed: A plaque above Strongheart’s bed reportedly had a quote from the Book of Job: “Ask the very beasts, and they will teach you”.

Short Information about Strongheart Movies

Strongheart, the German Shepherd, starred in six major silent adventure films between 1921 and 1927. Most of these films are now considered lost.
His movies typically featured him in rugged, dramatic roles that emphasized his power, loyalty, and intelligence:
  • The Silent Call (1921): His debut film, where he played “Flash,” a wolf-dog who is framed for sheep-killing but becomes a hero.
  • Brawn of the North (1922): A drama set in Alaska where Strongheart saves a woman from a forced marriage.
  • The Love Master (1924): Strongheart finds a mate (Lady Jule) and saves his human master in Canada.
  • White Fang (1925): The first film adaptation of the Jack London novel, featuring Strongheart as the titular wolf-dog character who is tamed after brutal dogfights.
  • North Star (1925): A northern melodrama where he aids a man on the run from the law.
  • The Return of Boston Blackie (1927): One of his later roles, co-starring with a famous fictional gentleman crook character.
