MY RATING Summary
I was introduced to Balto the Husky’s story from the 1995 Animated movie, and I thought it was an amazing heroic story.
The 2019 movie Togo showed that he might be the real hero of the entire Alaska Serum Run.
However, it also mentioned that a lead dog named Fox might be the real sled leader of his pack, so this might’ve tarnished Balto’s legacy.
All these sled dogs were heroes of their rights.

TRIVIA
- Samuel Balto, a Norweigan Explorer legend, inspired Balto’s name.
- He was one of the main sled dog heroes of the Alaska Serum Run to Nome 1925, where they had to deliver diphtheria antitoxin that would save lives during an outbreak.
That whole ice-cold journey of blizzards and storms with temperatures down to -50°F spanned 674 miles. - Gunnar Kaasen was Balto the Husky’s Musher. Over 20 Mushers with their team of sled dogs volunteered to help this entire journey.
- There’s a controversy about his legacy. Together with Fox, they were the lead dogs on the last 55 Miles of the whole journey. It’s not clear who was the main leading dog of their group.
Then there’s Togo from another team who ran through 260 miles of the more challenging path of the serum run, and some would say was the real hero of that event. - A statue in Central Park New York was made in his honor in 1925 with an inscription, “Endurance-Fidelity-Intelligence.”
- When Balto died in 1933, his body was conserved and displayed at the Museum of Natural History in Cleveland.
Every March, they host “Balto Day” to celebrate and inform about his legacy to guests. - His Hero Dog story was adapted into an animated movie in 1995 called “Balto”.
