Summary
“Leo the Lion” is the iconic mascot of the Hollywood film studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), famous for his roaring appearance at the start of films. The name is used as a generic title for the mascot, but in reality, several real lions have been used over the decades, though only the current, longest-serving lion was actually named Leo.

Fun Facts
- “Leo” is a Stage Name: MGM has used seven different lions for its logo over the decades, but only the current lion (since 1957) was actually named Leo.
- The First Lion Didn’t Roar: The first lion, Slats, appeared in silent films from 1924 to 1928 and did not make any noise in the logo footage.
- “Leo the Lucky”: The second lion, Jackie, was the first to “roar” on screen using pre-recorded sound. He survived multiple accidents, earning him the nickname “Leo the Lucky”.
- Surviving on Sandwiches: After a plane crash in the desert, Jackie and the pilot survived for four days with water and sandwiches.
- A Mix of Roars: The iconic roar sound effect has been remixed over the years, incorporating sounds from tigers to make it sound more “ferocious and majestic”.
- Inspired by Columbia University: The idea for a lion mascot came from Howard Dietz in 1916, who chose it as a tribute to his alma mater, Columbia University, whose teams were called “The Lions”.
- Appeared in Other Films: Many of the lions, including Jackie, had roles in other Hollywood films besides the logo.
- A Pine Tree to “Hold Down the Spirit”: The first lion, Slats, is buried under a large pine tree on his trainer’s farm, intended to “hold down the lion’s spirit”.
- Alfred Hitchcock Posed with Leo: A notable photo from 1958 shows Alfred Hitchcock with the current Leo the Lion.
