Summary
“Arthur the King” was a Ecuadorian stray dog who earned global fame after befriending a Swedish adventure racing team during a 430-mile (700-km) race in 2014. He followed the team through dense jungle and water, eventually being adopted by team captain Mikael Lindnord and brought to Sweden. Arthur’s story of loyalty inspired the 2024 film Arthur the King and new animal welfare laws in Ecuador.

Fun Facts
- He wasn’t always “Arthur”: The dog was a local farm and jungle dog in Ecuador with the original name of Barbuncho before the Swedish racing team met him.
- A meatball started it all: He first joined the team after team captain Mikael Lindnord offered him a canned meatball during the grueling 430-mile (700-km) Adventure Racing World Championship in Ecuador.
- He earned his royal name: Mikael named him Arthur, after the legendary British King Arthur, because of his dignified “aura,” even though he was wounded and covered in mud.
- He was a natural adventurer: Arthur fearlessly followed the team through the dense Amazon jungle, across muddy trails, and even swam alongside their kayaks for miles until Mikael pulled him into the boat.
- He became a global sensation: The dog’s loyalty captured the attention of people worldwide, leading to a massive social media and crowdfunding campaign to bring him to Sweden after the race.
- He inspired a new law: Arthur’s story led to the creation of the Arthur Foundation and contributed to the passage of an animal welfare law (the LOBA law) in Ecuador to protect stray dogs.
- He lived a happy life: After a 120-day quarantine period in Sweden, Arthur lived happily with Mikael and his family for six years before passing away from a malignant tumor in December 2020, just weeks before filming for the movie began.
- The movie’s dog had a mixed background: The dog who played Arthur in the movie was named Ukai, an Australian Shepherd, Border Collie, and Bouvier des Flandres mix, who was adopted from a rescue center in California.
