• Survived 3 shipwrecks in World War II: Bismarck, HMS Cossack, and HMS Ark Royal.

• Served both the German Kriegsmarine and British Royal Navy—a rare feat for any sailor, let alone a cat.

• Has a pastel portrait displayed at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich.

• He retired in Belfast, where he lived at a seamen’s home until his peaceful death in 1955.

• The original name was “Oscar,” possibly derived from the naval signal code “O” for “man overboard.”

• Tuxedo cat markings helped make him visually iconic and easily recognizable in retellings.

• After the Ark Royal sinking, he was reportedly found “angry but quite unharmed” clinging to a plank.

• His story is often used in books and videos about lucky or heroic animals in history.
