• Named after a Disney character: Dean named her Nala after the loyal lioness from his favourite film, The Lion King.
• The “pesto” lure: When Dean Nicholson first found Nala, he had to lure the starving kitten to his bike. The special treat that did the trick? Pesto!
• She chose her owner: Initially, Dean planned to find Nala a home in the next town. But Nala had other plans; she climbed onto his shoulder, fell asleep, and wouldn’t leave his side, convincing Dean she was meant to be his travel companion.
• A “purrfect” travel companion: Nala taught Dean, a “big, bearded, tattooed bloke,” to slow down and appreciate life more. Her presence helped him connect with strangers and even charmed policemen during their travels.
• She has her own passport: To cross borders legally, Nala has her own pet passport and a microchip.
• She’s an ambassador for animal welfare: Proceeds from Dean’s book, Nala’s World, and merchandise (like calendars) go to animal charities around the world, helping other strays.
• She’s well-travelled: Nala is one of the most travelled cats in the world, having cycled through over 29 countries, including Montenegro, Albania, Greece, and Turkey.
• She has many skills: Besides being a great passenger, Nala has also gone kayaking with Dean.
