Fun Facts About the Most Wanted Poodles

  • They are German, not French – Despite being the national dog of France (where they are called Caniche, meaning “duck dog”), the Poodle breed originated in Germany over 400 years ago. The name “poodle” comes from the German word “pudel” or “pudelin,” which means “to splash in water,” a nod to their original job.
  • Their iconic haircut was functional – The distinctive “pom-poms” and shaved areas weren’t just for style. The clipped coat reduced drag for swimming, while strategic puffs of hair were left on the joints and chest to protect vital organs and joints from the freezing cold water during duck hunts.
  • Poodles are highly intelligent – Poodles consistently rank as the second most intelligent dog breed, just behind the Border Collie. They can learn new commands in fewer than five repetitions and obey them with a 95% success rate or better.
  • They were originally water retrievers – These athletic dogs are excellent swimmers and were bred to retrieve shot waterfowl for hunters. Their dense, curly coat is water-resistant and helps insulate them in cold water.
  • Poodles have “hair,” not “fur” – Unlike many other dogs that shed seasonally, poodles have a continuously growing coat of hair that sheds very little. This makes them a better choice for people with allergies, though no dog is 100% hypoallergenic.
  • They come in three (or four) sizes – The American Kennel Club (AKC) officially recognizes Standard, Miniature, and Toy Poodles. Some other kennel clubs, like the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI), also recognise a “Medium” (or Moyen) size between the Standard and Miniature.
  • Poodles were once circus stars – Due to their trainability, intelligence, and showy appearance, miniature poodles were once popular performers in European circuses, where they would perform tricks like walking tightropes and acting out elaborate scenes.
  • They have a history as war dogs – Poodles have served in the military for centuries. A famous poodle named Boy accompanied his master, Prince Rupert of the Rhine, into battle during the English Civil War, and another named Moustache reportedly saved French troops during the Napoleonic Wars.
  • A poodle team once ran the Iditarod – In 1988, a musher attempted to run the famous Iditarod dog sled race with a team of Standard Poodles. They didn’t fare well due to matted fur and frozen paws, leading to a rule change requiring traditional northern breeds.
