Life and Journey
- Capture Keiko was captured near Iceland in 1979 when he was about two years old. He was held in various aquariums in Iceland and Canada before being sold to an amusement park, Reino Aventura, in Mexico City in 1985.
- Free Willy While in Mexico, living in an undersized, warm, and chlorinated tank that caused skin problems and general poor health, he was selected to star in the Hollywood film. The movie’s success sparked a massive public campaign to improve his living conditions and eventually return him to the wild.
- Rehabilitation In 1996, the Free Willy-Keiko Foundation, with public donations and support from Warner Bros. and philanthropists, relocated Keiko to the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport, Oregon. There, his health improved drastically in a new, larger, cool-seawater facility where he was trained to catch live fish and hold his breath longer.
- Return to the Wild In 1998, Keiko was airlifted by a U.S. Air Force plane to a sea pen in Klettsvík Bay, Iceland, the waters where he was born. After years of training and supervised open-ocean “walks,” he was fully released from his pen in July 2002.
- Final Years Keiko swam over 800 miles on his own to a Norwegian fjord, where he sought out human contact, allowing people to play with him and even ride on his back. His caretakers moved to Norway and continued to provide him with supplemental food and supervision.
